Who we are
Look Up is run by LUMUarchitecture (contact@lookupbuildings.com). We are responsible for the personal information described here (the “data controller” under UK GDPR).
What we collect
- Your account: when you sign in with Google we receive your name, email address and a Google account number. Your name is shown on your public profile and on leaderboards; your email is never shown to other people.
- Your visits: which buildings you log and when. If you allow location, we use it to find buildings near you and store it with the visit, but only you can see where you were.
- Nearby sorting: to show buildings and architects near you first, we use the approximate city of your internet connection, or — only if you tap “Use my exact location” — your location rounded to about 1 km. It is used to sort the list and is not saved.
- Your photos: photos you upload are shown with the building. Hidden photo data (such as GPS location, camera details and the original date) is removed before the photo is saved.
- Your suggestions: buildings or corrections you send, and the name or email you choose to add, so moderators can review them.
- Points, badges and rankings worked out from your visits and contributions.
Why we use it
To run your account, life list, badges and leaderboards, and to review suggestions (to provide the service you signed up for), and to keep Look Up safe from abuse (our legitimate interest). We don’t sell your information or use it for advertising.
Cookies and storage
We use one essential cookie to keep you signed in. If you choose to share your location for sorting, a cookie keeps it (rounded to about 1 km) in your browser for 30 days; “Forget my location” removes it. Older browser-only profiles keep a login key in your browser’s storage. We don’t use advertising or tracking cookies.
Services we rely on
- Google, for signing in with a Google account.
- Resend, which sends the email sign-in links.
- Vercel, which hosts the Look Up website.
- Supabase, which stores the Look Up database.
- Cloudflare (R2), which stores the photos you upload.
- Upstash, which counts requests to protect Look Up from abuse (it sees your IP address, not your account).
- Wikimedia Commons, which serves many building photos and portraits.
- MapTiler and OpenStreetMap, which serve the map images.
When your browser loads photos or maps from these services, they can see your IP address.
How long we keep it
For as long as you have an account. If you delete your account, your profile, visits, life list, galleries, points, badges and photos are deleted straight away. Suggestions you sent stay for the record, without your name or email.
Your rights
You can see your data on your profile, and delete your account at any time from your profile. You can also ask us for a copy of your data, to correct it, or to stop using it, by emailing privacy@lookupbuildings.com. If you’re unhappy with how we handle your data, you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ico.org.uk).
